The girls in our Oh English program are vibrant, curious learners with a genuine passion for outdoor exploration and global discovery. This week, we had the distinct pleasure of welcoming Ms. Karen, AYP adventurous journey instructor, who guided our girls through an engaging exploration of cartography and world geography. Her session transformed map-reading from a practical skill into a gateway for understanding our interconnected world.

In an era of ubiquitous smartphone technology, digital navigation has become our default. Yet this dependency carries hidden vulnerabilities: depleted batteries, lost signal, unexpected detours, and moments of disorientation can leave travelers stranded without solutions. By contrast, mastering traditional navigation tools—reading paper maps and using a compass—equips our girls with practical resilience and deeper geographical literacy. These analog skills do more than solve logistical problems; they foster a richer understanding of terrain, spatial relationships, and the natural environment. Many discovered that engaging with physical maps sparked a newfound curiosity about wilderness ecology and landscape appreciation.

What struck us most was the girls’ focused engagement with the specialized vocabulary of orienteering and navigation. By synthesizing classroom learning with hands-on practice, they didn’t simply acquire technical knowledge—they developed critical thinking skills that extend far beyond map-reading.
